Functional Categories in the Nominal Domain

چکیده
0. Proposal. A central debate in the study of phrase structure concerns the nature of functional projections which dominate lexical ones. At one extreme is the position, advocated by Cinque (1999, 2002), that grammars employ a universal set of functional categories and that their number and relative order is the same across languages, regardless of properties of the lexical head. At the other extreme is the weaker position, adopted among others by Grimshaw (1994) and Bošković (1997), that only independently motivated phrase structure is projected, with considerable disagreement about what constitutes appropriate “motivation”. While the literature is overwhelmingly concerned with resolving this issue with respect to clausal structure (i.e., the extended projection of the verb), here we consider nominal structure and argue for the weaker position. We conclude that not all potential functional categories of the extended projection of the noun are realized in all structures.

On the Acquisition of the Indefinite Article
The present article argues that the idea of morphology-driven syntax carries over to first-language acquisition. Morphology encodes properties of functional categories, i.e. particular features and feature values that must be set according to the target (adult) language during the acquisition process. In agreement with previous findings concerning the acquisition of functional categories in the...
متن کاملAcquiring the Left Periphery of the Modern Greek DP
Generative research on language acquisition within the Principles and Parameters framework based on the Functional Parameterisation Hypothesis (cf. Atkinson, 1992) has provided a formal account of the acquisition of lexical vs. functional categories. Accordingly, early child grammar consists of lexical-thematic categories. This idea originates in Lebeaux (1988) and has been further developed am...
متن کاملPhasing in Mixed Categories: Evidence From Irish
In this short squib, I look at the phenomenon of "mixed category" verbal nouns in Irish. I argue that the verbal character of these elements follows primarily from their internal semantics as predicates. Unlike previous accounts I argue that nominal characteristics of these categories follows from two sources. In one group, they are nominal because, following Borsley and Kornfilt (2000), they h...
متن کاملA Linguistic Analysis of Conference Titles in Applied Linguistics
Over the past twenty-five years, researchers have expressed considerable interest in titles of academic publications. Unfortunately, conference paper titles (CPTs) have only recently begun to receive attention. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate the text length, syntactic structure, and lexicon of CPTs in Applied Linguistics. A data set of 698 titles was selected from the 2008 ...
